FPL Captain Call Gameweek 20: Who’s the best pick

Our top pick (Mitrovic) outscored the ever-reliable Haaland in GW19 to reward our brave choice to not captain the Manchester City forward.

We have another big decision to make this week which could set your season up for glory or pain, depending on your choice.

Whether you’re looking for a safe pick or a high-risk/high-reward option, we’ve analysed all the fixtures to help you make the best decision for your team.

TRIPLE Captain Choice

Erling Haaland, Manchester City

After looking elsewhere for our Gameweek 19 captaincy, it is time to return to the comfort of a Haaland captaincy.

Manchester City have a double gameweek with fixtures against Manchester United and Tottenham.
Although these fixtures might not seem ideal, I’d like to remind you that Haaland has scored an incredible 21 goals in 16 matches in the league this season.

Manchester City scored six goals against Manchester United in their previous fixture, and Tottenham have conceded 2+ goals in six of their last seven matches.

The decision to triple captain Haaland is due to the following reasons:

  1. Haaland has a history of injury issues which have seen him miss matches in every season of his professional career. Currently he is at full fitness and has recently had the World Cup break to prepare his body for the coming matches. Therefore, I will take this opportunity while I can.
  2. Manchester City will have more double gameweeks, but these may be more suited to using other chips such as Bench Boost or Free Hit. This is due to several teams all having double gameweek simultaneously.
  3. It is important that the player you Triple Captain has a full strength lineup around him to complement his skills. Currently Manchester City have nearly a full strength attack which will play in to the Norwegian’s hands perfectly.

The bookies have given Haaland a 79% chance to score this gameweek which fills me with confidence about my choice.

Top contender

Marcus Rashford, Manchester United

Rashford is in fantastic form at the moment. He has recorded three goals and one assist across the last three fixtures for Manchester United in the league while also recording another three goals and an assist across two cup matches this week to further cement his form.

Manchester United also have a double gameweek and their fixtures consist of hosting Manchester City at Old Trafford and facing Crystal Palace away. Manchester City have struggled defensively in recent times, conceding in three of their last four fixtures. Palace will be the fixture where Rashford would be expected to earn the majority of his points. Palace have conceded 15 goals in nine home matches and face a Manchester United side who are in full flight at the moment.

Rashford has been given a 52% chance of scoring by the bookies. Coupled with his playmaking and assisting abilities, he could be an excellent choice for those after a differential.

Rashford could also be considered as a differential Triple Captain choice this gameweek. When using this chip, it is always recommended to ride the strong form at the time of players who are in strong attacking teams.

Daring differential

Riyad Mahrez, Manchester City

This is definitely not a choice for the feint-hearted FPL manager.

Mahrez has always had the issue of lack of game time while at Manchester City, which has hindered his ability to be a great option.

However, this double gameweek could be the week where having him in your team pays off.

Mahrez scored two goals against Chelsea in the FA cup before being rested in the League cup fixture during the week. Pep has praised the ‘fantastic’ Mahrez for turning his form around this season.

Mahrez has recorded one goal and two assists in the last three premier league fixtures for Manchester City and he could look to add to this total across both matches this gameweek.

Mahrez has been given a 58% chance to score a goal by the bookies, second to only Haaland in the rankings.
