FPL Captain Call Gameweek 21: Who’s the best pick

The decision to pull the trigger on Triple Captain Haaland in Double Gameweek 20 did leave us unfulfilled. One goal and eight FPL points isn’t setting the world on fire, but it is better than no returns so we’ll take that and move on to Gameweek 21.

We have another big decision to make this week which could set your season up for glory or pain, depending on the choice you make .

I’m glad to say that the tough decision of who to choose as your FPL captain has been analysed, scrutinised and detailed in the below write up.

Whether you’re looking for a safe pick or a high-risk/high-reward option, we’ve analysed all the fixtures to help you make the best decision for your team.

You should also check out what the bookies believe will happen in gameweek 21

Top Pick

Erling Haaland, Manchester City

After a slightly underwhelming performance over the double gameweek, Haaland is still once again a top choice for captaincy. City struggled against a revitalised Manchester United who are looking to be one of the top defences in the league currently followed by a 4-2 win over Spurs with neither team looking very convincing in their performances.

I’d like to once again remind you that Haaland has scored an incredible 22 goals in 18 matches in the league this season.

Wolves have conceded in 11 of their past 13 premier league matches and face Manchester City at the Etihad which is still one of the scariest fixtures on any Premier League team’s calendar.

City have scored an impressive 35 goals in 10 games at Home this season. Even though City aren’t firing on all cylinders, a rested De Bruyne should help the Citizens put a few goals past Wolves in a bounce back match.

The bookies have given Haaland a 65% chance to score this gameweek which supports my view.

Top contenders

Ivan Toney, Brentford

Toney has had a turbulent season to say the least. Whether it be looming suspensions due to betting allegations or a knee injury which looked to almost end his season, Toney has continued to perform and prosper in the Premier League in his Sophomore year in the league.

Brentford have won four of their last five matches and are unbeaten in their last seven fixtures. This is a team in form and full of fire. The Bees have also scored 2+ goals in their last six fixtures.

Coupling the above with Brentford decimating Leeds 5-2 in their last meeting paints a pretty picture for Toney owners. Leeds havn’t improved their defence lately either with a record of conceding 2+ goals in five of their last six matches

Toney has been given a 38% chance of scoring by the bookies. Coupled with his playmaking and assisting abilities, he could be an excellent choice for those who are after a differential.

Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City

De Bruyne definitely has not performed to his usual World Class status over the recent period but this could be the match he uses to return to form.

After being given a break during the week from team training and being rested for the Spurs fixture, we could see Kevin return with a hunger and determination to lead his team back in to the title race as Arsenal threaten to run away with the league.

De Bruyne scored an amazing four goals against Wolves in May 2022 and this could be a good omen for the Belgian midfielder.

De Bruyne will always have the Norwegian star Haaland to potentially assist while also having a 37% chance to score himself.

If you believe Manchester City will return to form, this man will be the engine room behind that.

Daring differential

Kieran Trippier, Newcastle

Rarely would I consider a defender as a captain option, but Trippier and Newcastle have been performing to an unbelievable standard.

Trippier has returned points in 16 of 19 matches this season. Yes, you read that correctly. Trippier has combined Newcastle’s defensive solidity with his chance-creating abilities to earn himself 28 bonus points for the season along with 13 clean sheets.

Crystal Palace have struggled in front of goal lately and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Trippier record either a clean sheet, an assist, or both!
