FPL Captain Call Gameweek 4: Who’s the best pick?

Gameweek 4 is the last gameweek before the first international break of the 23/24 season so you will want to finish on a high before having two weeks to mull over your team.

Gameweek 3 saw some interesting results with Arsenal drawing 2-2 at home to a 10-man Fulham side while Liverpool managed to beat Newcastle after losing Van Dijk to a red card in the first half.

The upcoming gameweek has favourable matchups for the likes of Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea while Arsenal host Manchester United at the Emirates.

As many FPL managers have loaded up on Arsenal and United assets, this match could be make or break for rankings before the break!

Whether you’re looking for a safe pick to get the season off to a good start or are looking for a differential as you reach for the number one rank, we have you sorted in the below analysis.

Here is our analysis of the odds ahead of gameweek 4

Top Pick

Erling Haaland, Manchester City

Haaland showed his human side last gameweek by failing to convert from the penalty spot. It only took him 26 minutes after that to find the back of the net and all order was restored in the world.

Haaland is likely to retain penalty duties after converting many for the Citizens last season so I wouldn’t be too concerned if I was a manager.

Phil Foden came off the bench late in Gameweek 3 due to illness which hampered City’s creativity to an extent but he should be fit and raring to go for Gameweek 4. Champions League rotation is also not a concern just yet and Manchester City face a struggling Fulham side at the Etihad. This is as good a fixture as you could ask for.

Fulham were lucky to score a 2-2 draw with Arsenal last week after conceding 3.2 expected goals and 11 shots on target. That brings their total goals conceded over the last two weeks to five and shots on target conceded to 19.

Haaland has been given an astounding 77% chance to score and is our top pick for Gameweek 3.

This is the highest single gameweek probability of scoring Captain Call has seen to date!

Top contenders

Jarrod Bowen, West Ham

Jarrod Bowen is a name we did not expect to feature much in Captain Call after West Ham’s performances last season. However, here we are.

The English forward has 23 points to his name in the first three game weeks and West Ham face Luton this week who have shown early signs of being the worst defensive team of the season.

Bowen has averaged just under four shots per match and has provided four key passes across the season so his points are not lucky.

Bowen has been given a 29% chance of scoring by the bookies and is also likely to facilitate with some assists.

James Maddison, Tottenham

James Maddison has been thriving as Tottenham’s new main man under new coach Ange Postecoglou. Postecoglou’s pressing and attacking coaching style has seen Tottenham score two goals per match while Maddison has led every key attacking stat such as shots and chances created.

Spurs face Burnley who so far have conceded three goals to both Manchester City and Aston Villa as they appear to struggle with life in the Premier League.

Maddison will once again be the engine room for the spurs attack and will likely be in the points once again.

Maddison has been assigned a 39% to score by the bookies and is more likely to provide assists for his teammates.

Daring differential

Ollie Watkins, Aston Villa

For those who like to have a bit of fun and bet against Haaland, this could be the one for you.

Liverpool will be without captain and leader of the defensive line Virgil Van Dijk after his red card against Newcastle. Konate is also still a doubt to be fit for this fixture who is the other first-choice centre back for Liverpool.

Watkins scored against Liverpool last season and has three points returns in three fixtures this season as Aston Villa have continued their great form where they left off at  the end to last season under new manager Unai Emery.

Watkins has been given a 31% chance to score this week but I can see Aston Villa putting a few goals past Liverpool.
