FPL Captain Call Gameweek 17: Who’s the Best Pick?

FPL is back, and it’s time to make the tough decision of who to name as your FPL captain gameweek 17. But don’t worry — we’ve got you covered!

Whether you’re looking for a safe pick or a high-risk/high-reward option, we’ve analysed all the options to help you make the best decision for your team.

Captain Obvious

Erling Haaland, Manchester City

This man is what FPL dreams are made of. He plays for Manchester City under Pep Guardiola. He has a fantastic scoring record before joining the club and has the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden feeding him balls to put in the back of the net. And to think he had a starting price of £11.5m.

He should always be at the forefront of your mind regarding captaincy and is my top pick for this week. He will be the choice for many managers, so if you are looking to play it safe with captaincy, he is a safe bet.

18 goals from 13 matches is a ridiculous record, and the bookies have given him a 67% chance to score, which is 20% clear of any other players this week.

He also is on penalty duty and averaging four shots a game, so the numbers he has been putting up aren’t a fluke.

Manchester City face Leeds who have not kept a clean sheet in their last 11 matches across all competitions.

Top contenders

Harry Kane, Tottenham

Harry Kane may still be reeling from his penalty miss that ultimately knocked England out of the World Cup but he is presented with an excellent opportunity to get back on the horse and lift Spurs up the table.

Spurs face Brentford, who has recently made a habit of conceding goals. Brentford conceded 5 goals to Newcastle and 4 to Aston Villa in the lead-up to the World Cup. Worrying signs for any manager

Kane has been given a 47% probability by the bookies to score, and combined with his probability to record an assist, he’s a solid choice for captaincy this week.

Marcus Rashford, Manchester United

Some have labelled Marcus Rashford as an FPL’ troll’ due to his inconsistent performance in recent years.
However, Rashford is looking revitalised under new manager Erik Ten Hag. He is very involved in the attack (even more now that Ronaldo has departed from the club).
Rashford has recorded 2+ shots on target in 4 of his last 5 premier league matches and has a share of the free-kick duties.
He has a solid return of 4 Goals and 2 Assists across 13 starts and faces Nottingham Forest at home, who are well known for shipping goals in the 22/23 season.
The bookies have given Rashford a 40% chance of scoring, which feels right.

Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City

Kevin De Bruyne. The maestro. The wizard of the Manchester City midfield. The engine room. Don’t forget this man exists just because Haaland is the shiny new toy at Manchester City.
He relishes having Erling Haaland as his new target in the number nine position. Haaland’s gravity draws defenders, allowing De Bruyne more space at the edge of the penalty area.

De Bruyne has been given a 31% chance of scoring by the bookies. Couple this with his playmaking and assisting abilities. He could be an excellent choice for those who are after a differential.

Daring differential

Darwin Nunez, Liverpool

Darwin Nunez has been the much-maligned new signing at Liverpool. He has all the physical attributes of a star-studded striker, which we have seen glimpses of. However, his finishing has been letting him down at times this season.

He has been averaging over 4 shots in matches he has started and over 0.5 xG, which are impressive underlying stats.

The bookies have given Darwin a 39% chance of scoring against Aston Villa. It could be an excellent opportunity to choose him as a differential with Emi Martinez still on holiday for Aston Villa after his World Cup triumph.
